Baby Grand Orrery – Handcrafted Brass/Stone Solar System Model (USA Made)
Baby Grand Orrery – Handcrafted Brass/Stone Solar System Model (USA Made)
- Baby Grand Orrery
A meticulously handcrafted solar system model that brings the movement of the planets to life. Designed and built by Science Art in Boulder, Colorado, USA, this heirloom-quality astronomical instrument reflects over 30 years of craftsmanship, innovation, and trust.
Each piece is individually built — not mass-produced, not 3-D printed or laser cut but precision-engineered with hand crafted joinery using solid brass mechanics, fine hardwoods, and semi-precious stones.
True-to-Orbit Motion – A Kinetic Solar System Model
The Baby Grand Orrery is a fully functional, mechanically accurate planetary model representing all nine planets in correct relational motion around a bright orange calcite Sun (or optional solid brass Sun with hematite planets).
- Mercury completes 1,028 orbits for every orbit of Pluto, maintaining true astronomical ratios.
- The Earth/Moon system displays the Moon’s compound orbit around Earth while Earth moves around the Sun.
- The entire clockwork is powered by either a hand-crank system or battery-operated motor (3 C batteries included).
This is not a mere display piece — it’s a working model of the Solar System, crafted with precision to show the beauty of the planets’ motion.
Fine Handcrafted Design – Wood, Brass, and Stone
Each Baby Grand Orrery rests on a 12-sided hardwood base, handcrafted in your choice of:
- Black Walnut – rich and elegant
- Natural Oak – timeless and durable
- Red Mahogany – warm and classic
A beautifully engraved brass calendar and zodiac ring, supported by 12 solid brass pillars, surrounds the mechanism. The visible brass gearworks demonstrate the intricate movement of the planets, while a removable brass armillary half-sphere crowns the Baby Grand Orrery.
We also welcome custom wood requests, provided they come from sustainable, non-exotic sources.

Care Instructions
Brass and hardwood require only minor dusting with no hard abrasives. Brass will naturally tarnish. If you wish to maintain a bright brass look, use 000 steel wool to polish the armillary sphere, calendar ring and planet arms.
